Update on Jar Jar's Spectrum King grow

So we have another update from Jar Jar Danks and his Spectrum King, along with a small update from his friend, the Lazy Farmer. You can re-familiarise yourself with all the details of these two grows in our original post here - basically Jar Jar has four Reserva Privada Kandy Kush plants (DNA Genetics) on a drip system. He did have a couple of Stardawg clones too, but they didn't fair too well and have ended up getting turned into oil so we'll concentrate on the Kandy Kush here.

This first batch of photos above were taken at week number 7. This is Jar Jar's first time growing Kandy Kush but he's sampled it plenty of times before and always enjoyed the 'fizzy cola' taste. At this point he wasn't 100% happy with how these looked though, saying they lacked a bit of weight. He also didn't like how stretchy they were looking in general, even though he did know their reputation for doing that going in. In general it looked like this might be a bit of a repeat of his underwhelming experience with the KIND LED... However, fast forward two weeks and things have improved, evidenced by these shots below from week number 9.

In comparison to a standard HPS bulb, yield is still perhaps a little under, but Jar Jar says that resin and crystal production is a bit better - we can see these are looking pretty frosty. The upturn may also be down to his decision to add one shot of Rock Nutrients' Resinator in week 7. There was a bit of nutrient burn on some of the leaves which Jar Jar was a bit annoyed at, and there are also a lot of purple leaves to be seen here too, though we're not quite sure of why that happened as it hasn't been particularly cold in there...

The plants were all lollipopped and the net was cut off as this is a pretty confined space and Jar Jar didn't want them shooting upwards much higher, so they've ended up growing in different directions. Some have even ended up upside down. Jar Jar doesn't mind this as he says it allows the bottom of the plants a bit more access to light and leads to them filling out, rather than a huge concentration in the top cola. He even has a theory that it simulates the low autumnal sun that plants tend to like towards the end of their bloom cycle.

The light has been able to cover much of the canopy in the end, although there has been a bit of falloff towards the edges and Jar Jar says there's a noticeable difference between those that received the full whack of light and those that didn't. In fact, you can see in these photos that the leaves on the outer edges are a bit darker. To solve this, next time he wants to try supplemental 2FT LED 60W striplights or Maxibright Daylight 315W bulbs down either side. He can't quite stretch to shelling out for two Spectrum Kings at the moment...

So it's only a few days till they'll all be ready for harvest now.

Finally we have an update and photos from his friend, the Lazy Farmer who had a bit of an assortment of automatic strains: Lowryder #1 and  Lowryder #2 from Lowryder Seeds, Critical Jack from Dinafem and Ultra Lemon Haze from Auto Seeds. These guys didn't receive quite as much attention as Jar Jar's grow (hence the title of Lazy Farmer), and Jar Jar says he reckons there was a cal-mag deficiency and pH lockout. He also says the KIND was OK, nothing special, again. It ran at about 20 hours a day and still produced a fairly low yield, but Lazy Farmer didn't spend much on the grow and he's pretty happy with his final return.

Jar Jar said he tried some of the Ultra Lemon Haze and it "ripped his face off", so all's well that ends well!  We eagerly anticipate a smoke report on his own Kandy Kush too, as well as the final word on his experience with the Spectrum King.

Dr O's Spain Trip

We've been lucky enough to get some photos from a new contributor we'll call Dr O. This guy just recently returned from a trip to Spain where he was helping a friend out there making extracts, so here are a few of his holiday snaps!

"A big bucket of bud. This one is Moby Dick. We were using all outdoor-grown material with a high moisture content and some bits of mould! A lot of what we ended up with was quite dark in colour."

"We were testing some new kit from BHO Hardware. This is a closed loop setup meaning the butane can be vented off or reused and not just pumped into the air. This blast tube has a 450g capacity. "

"This is oil from 450g of Moby Dick waiting to be purged."

"Fresh extract in an 8" collection bowl."

"Extract fresh from the bowl. We were air purging at this point. It has a high viscosity so it holds its shape. There's only so much you can purge in the air though so this went it the oven where it spread out again once heated."

"The golden extract on the left is butane hash oil dissolved in isopropyl. The extract on the right is iso oil and isopropyl pulls out chlorophyll, hence the dark colour. These are both being mixed on magnetic stirrers and the alcohol is being extracted through a hood. It took about a day to complete the extraction this way and the final product (THC oil) will end up in syringes or capsules for cancer patients. It will also be tested soon at Canna for THC and CBD."

"This is extract from AK-47 being purged in the oven."

"The same extract held up to the light."

"More shatter that's spent 24 hours in the oven."

"This is an extract from Kandy Kush bud. We couldn't turn it into shatter because it was just too sappy."

So there you have it, what a way to spend a few days! We also hope to be testing and reviewing more gear from BHO Hardware soon...
